The Easiest Way to Seal Small Wood Projects

We’re getting ready to start some home learning this year with Camden. He’s only 2 1/2 so it won’t really be preschool, but it’s going to be an introduction to homeschooling through both guided and independent play.

One of the ways I’m encouraging him to get excited about learning is by using a treasure chest. In the morning, Camden will get to open the treasure chest and see what’s inside.

It might be something from right off his toy shelves or bookshelves – like his bed stringing kit.

Or it could be a mixture of a currently owned toy with an update – for example, his tractors with a new track drawn on a paper roll.

Even better, it could be items to create something new – like things to paint with or stickers and markers to draw with. 

But first, I needed to get the treasure chest ready. 

The Easiest Way to Seal Small Wood Projects

I found my wooden treasure chest at Michaels, but you can find a ton of options on Amazon too.

To seal the wood, I used , which you can also grab on Amazon. While it says it is a stone & steel sealer, it works on wood, leather and other options as well. It’s food-safe, pet-safe, and contains no harsh chemicals. I like to use it to seal small wood projects because it’s easy to work with. 

To seal small wood projects, just squirt a small amount onto the cloth (which is included). Wipe the cloth onto the wood in a sweeping motion. After applying, wipe the wood with a dry cloth to remove any excess product. 

When you’re done, let it dry. That’s it! It only takes a few minutes and a small amount of SimpleCoat. My treasure chest needed to be protected to hold up to toddler use, and now I feel like it’s well sealed and ready to go!

My Thoughts on Sealing Small Wood Projects with SimpleCoat

I thought SimpleCoat was so easy to use – it comes with the reusable microfiber cloth and you don’t even have to wash it when you’re done. Just store it in the included bag and it’s ready for the next time.

It only took a small amount to coat the treasure chest, and it was simple and smooth to wipe it on. It seemed to tone down the pine smell of the box – it was strong before! I’m hoping it stands the test of time, and I’m anxious to try it on other materials.
