The best toys for newborn babies

Camden is 10 weeks old right now, and he is really starting to get into playtime, both independent and with mama and daddy.  I was hesitant to buy too many toys before he was born, because I wanted to wait and buy just a couple of things for each stage – things I was sure he would be interested in and would play with.

As we started figuring out that he loves music, lights, swinging toys and crinkling sounds, I’ve found a few toys I love for him.

Here are my top picks for baby toys at the 0-3 month stage (although I have a feeling this won’t change much from 3-6 months!):

Skip Hop Play Mat

Skip Hop Activity Gym, Woodland Friends - image 1 of 5

This playmat is our favorite thing right now! At first it was great for tummy time, but now, as Camden has started figuring out how to use his hands, he loves to hit at the dangling animals. There are two different positions to hang each animal from, so you can hang them lower when baby is littler, and higher as they grow. The mirror is great for them to look at themselves as they’re laying on their backs.

Plus, each animal does its own thing: the fox is a windchime, the owl has a wooden teether ring, the bunny squeaks, and the hedgehog plays music. The mat is nicely padded for Camden’s comfort, too.

Although this is probably the priciest toy we own so far, I think it’s well worth it, because we use it multiple times a day. We use it for tummy time, independent playtime and playtime with mama. It’s so worth it, and it is super high quality! (Links to other similar items: here and here.)

Taggies Crinkle Me Toy

Baby boy has just started to find his hands and put things in his mouth. He tries to chew on everything he can find, so I knew it was time to find a good tag toy.

I ended up getting the Crinkle Me Toy because it was one of the cheapest tag toys I could find. Let’s face it – at this age, you don’t need to spend very much on baby toys! But I’ve ended up loving it more than I ever thought I would with it’s cheap price tag. The tags are great, but the big square also crinkles, and Camden loves to squeeze it and hear the crinkle sound. It actually soothes him when he’s crying and we crinkle it. Plus, there’s a squeaker in the middle! It also has a ring to hang from the stroller, crib or car seat. Seriously – so worth the low price!

This toy is big, so Camden is able to really hold onto it and grab different parts of it. It is honestly his favorite toy right now – and it’s cute, too! It comes in different animal designs – beside the owl, there’s an elephant, a giraffe, a fox (I love this one!) and a hedgehog (and this one!).

Carter’s Grey Owl Security Blanket

Carter's Security Blanket, Grey Owl (Discontinued by Manufacturer)

I registered for this blanket because I love owls, and because we went with a pastel woodland theme for the nursery. We didn’t get it at either baby shower, and I’d gotten a few other blankets, so I was having a hard time justifying it. And then, my husband’s cousin sent us this in the mail!

I’m so glad we got it. It’s small, but just the right size for little hands to hold and cuddle. Camden loves to lay in our arms and just touch and feel the softness of the blanket and the owl. He hugs it and grabs onto it. It’s a great nighttime relaxer for him – and maybe he’ll end up loving owls as much as I do!

There’s also a matching changing pad cover, set of receiving blankets, crib sheet, and blanket!

Gloworm by Playskool

Do you guys remember these things from our childhood?? They’ve been around forever! But my husband has never heard of one until my sister gave this one to us!

Camden loves the gloworm because it’s soft, grabbable, plays music and its face lights up. My nephew carried his around until he was 3 years old. It’s just a classic, great toy that babies can hold onto, look at and move around.

There is also a pink girl Gloworm!

Baby Einstein Sea Dreams Soother

Baby Einstein Sea Dreams Soother

My mom bought this for Camden as a Christmas present before he was born. She thought we’d use it when he got a little older and got bored or too big for his overhead mobile.

But when we got it out and turned it on, Camden couldn’t stop staring at it. He is fascinated by it and loves to look at it and babble to it when he’s laying in the crib. This soother has a remote so we can turn it off and on without waking him up. It also has 2 volume settings and multiple different functions – it can stay dark and just play music; it can light up and move without playing music; it can light up, move and play music at the same time; and it can stay dark but play ocean sounds white noise. We’ve used every feature at one time or another, and I see this being a toy that he loves for a long time!

Those are the toys that Camden has really taken a liking to in his first 11 weeks of life! It’s so much fun to play with him now that he is interested in playtime.

What toys does (or did) your baby love at 0-3 months? I’m always looking for new recommendations!
