9 Best St. Patrick’s Day Books for Toddlers

St. Patrick’s Day is about a week away, and we’re pulling out all our books about leprechauns, pots of gold, and shamrocks. Here are my favorite 9 St. Patrick’s Day books for toddlers!

JAck and the Leprechaun st. patricks day books for toddlers

Jack and the Leprechaun

This is probably Camden’s most favorite St. Patrick’s Day book, so much so that we have a fun leprechaun’s gold scavenger hunt that goes along with the book. Check out that blog post and prep a cute activity for St. Patrick’s Day week (psssst: Cam asks to do it all year long!).

how to catch a leprechaun

How to Catch a Leprechaun

We love this book too! Throughout the book, the kids try to make different leprechaun traps to trap one and get his gold. This year, we’re making a leprechaun trap too! Check Pinterest for all sorts of easy leprechaun trap ideas.

Jamie ORourke and the Big Potato books for toddlers

Jamie O’Rourke and the Big Potato

I remember loving this book as a kid, and I always enjoyed sharing it with my second graders when I taught. Now Cam and I have fun with it together. Jamie O’Rourke is the laziest man in all of Ireland, and when he catches a leprechaun, he gives up the chance at gold for a wish that will let him continue to be lazy. It’s both cute and humorous – typical of a book by Tomie DePaola!

berenstain bears st patricks day toddler book

The Berenstain Bears St. Patrick’s Day

We love most Berenstain Bear books, and this one is no exception. It’s filled with lots of Irish traditions, like parades, Irish dancers, bagpipes, etc, which helps open conversations about how they celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland.

pete the cat great leprechaun chase

Pete the Cat: The Great Leprechaun Chase

Any Pete the Cat book is a hit in our house! We actually watched a read aloud of The Great Leprechaun Chase on YouTube – just search for it! After Pete learns about leprechauns, he decides to trap one and get his gold. This is another great one to read and then make a leprechaun trap to go along with it.

st patricks day nonfiction

St. Patrick’s Day by Gail Gibbons (nonfiction)

I have TONS of Gail Gibbons books, and they’re great ways to introduce kids to nonfiction topics. To help toddlers and preschoolers learn this history and traditions behind St. Patrick’s Day, this book is a great place to start!

ten lucky leprechauns st patricks day books for toddlers

Ten Lucky Leprechauns

This is one of the books I got this year for Camden. We’re doing a leprechaun counting activity to go along with this book, because it’s a fun little picture book that uses rhyme to count to ten leprechauns. Plus it’s only $1.99 on Kindle, so if you have a Kindle kids tablet this is perfect.

happy st patricks day tiny book

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Tiny!

Tiny books are another favorite series in this house. Camden is going to be excited to see this one. Tiny and his boy head to a St. Patrick’s Day celebration and Tiny gets lost! Tiny books are always short and simple, so they’re perfect for short attention spans.

gingerbread man and leprechaun st patricks day books for toddlers

The Gingerbread Man and the Leprechaun Loose at School

Camden has always enjoyed The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School, so this one is bound to be just as big of a hit! It’s another one perfect for reading before making leprechaun traps with your kids.

pout pout fish lucky leprechaun book for kids

Pout Pout Fish: Lucky Leprechaun

I never get tired of Pout Pout Fish books. Beware, though, this one doesn’t rhyme like the typical Pout Pout books. It’s just a cute story about Pout Pout Fish trying to find his lost pot of gold.

And there you have it! Those are some of my favorite St. Patrick’s Day books for toddlers and preschoolers. What activities are you doing to have some St. Patrick’s Day fun with your kids? We’ve got a pot of gold scavenger hunt planned, as well as leprechaun counting and leprechaun-trap-making. I can’t wait to share them with you!
