Sandbox Coin Hunt

๐˜š๐˜ฌ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ด ๐˜—๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ: digging, object permanence, finding, grasping and more!

Choose an object that you have numerous of – I used plastic coins, but pouch caps, linking cubes, counters, etc will work too. Hide them in the sandbox – or fill a bin or baby pool with sand and hide the objects in there. Place some other objects in there to distract from the hidden coins.

Hype your kid up by telling them how fun it will be to find coins! Find a book about searching to read first if you want. Then offer them a shovel and let them dig for the coins any way they want. When theyโ€™re done, you can suggest they hide them all for you (or someone else).

After they find all the objects, have them sort them by color or count them.

Treasure Chest Learning Moments in Week 2 Homeschool Preschool

Popcorn and Movie Night

Choose a movie that you also have the book for (you can grab the Little Golden Book or Early Readers version of most Disney movies at the library). Put popcorn and the book and, if you want, fun treat bags or boxes. I found these adorable football snack trays atย @partycityย for $4, so I got them for special events in our house!

๐˜๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜œ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ: have youโ€™re child open the treasure chest and guess what the activity is going to be. Cam was not able to guess without clues – clues are okay!
Once theyโ€™ve guessed, make popcorn together. We used a popcorn maker and let Cam pour popcorn while it was unplugged, but if you use the stove, help them learn to be careful! Talk to them about how the kernels will pop up – prepare them so theyโ€™re not startled! Let them watch the popcorn pop, and then let them scoop up some to put in their bowl or tray.
Eat popcorn while you read the book together – ๐˜ ๐˜ด๐˜ถ๐˜จ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ต ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ฌ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ด๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜บโ€™๐˜ท๐˜ฆ ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฌ ๐˜ข๐˜ต ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ต ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ง๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ, ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜บโ€™๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ง๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ข๐˜ณ ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฉ ๐˜ช๐˜ต.
Then settle in and watch the movie together. Ask her occasionally to predict whatโ€™s going to happen – she should know, because you just read the book.
If you notice something is different in the book, talk about it with her.

๐˜‰๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ถ๐˜ด: after the movie, have your preschooler show you her favorite part of the movie by finding it in the book.

It is perfectly fine to have completely un-educational movie nights, but itโ€™s also great to teach our children that we can learn from movies and that they give us things to discuss!

Painting Exploration

treasure chest painting exploration for preschool homeschool

Skills Practiced: creativity, art exploration, motor skills, color identification, color mixing

How to Make: Decide if you have a purpose behind the painting or if it’s just going to be a free paint session. We had Cam’s grandma’s birthday coming up, so I added some craft foam for him to paint a card on for her. Gather fun brushes (we found all of ours on Amazon – a huge set for like $8). Add different colors of paint to the treasure chest. Have paper plates and painting paper ready to go – he is going to want to paint as soon as he sees the paint!

How to Use: Let your preschooler open the treasure chest and guess that you’re going to paint. If you’re wanting them to create something specific, talk about that. Then let them get to painting! Simple, but fun for them to discover and guess what they’re doing!

Bonus: Do this activity after the Mouse Paint activity. Then practice mixing paint colors together and predicting/remembering what color they will make.

We’ve had so much fun playing and learning this week, and I’ve got even more planned for next week! Follow along here or on Instagram to see all the activities!
