Homemade Taco Seasoning
Homemade Taco Seasoning
This Homemade Taco Seasoning is the easiest recipe ever – just dump, mix and use! Bonus: there’s no preservatives or weird chemicals like the store-bought stuff. And it honestly takes as much time as grabbing a container or packet at the store!

I will admit – I used to be the type to just buy the huge container of taco seasoning. It’s convenient and if you buy the right one, it tastes pretty good too. But it got to a point where there was only one taco seasoning I could find that didn’t contain onion. I have an intolerance to onion, so I can’t eat it, and onion powder gives me a terrible sore throat.
So I started making my own. Let’s face it – that’s the way to go anyway. That way, there’s no preservatives or anything weird in it – just spices. Also, it means I can use higher quality spices, or fancier ones – liked smoked paprika instead of plain (ooh la la!) and the flavor quality is sooooo much better.
Any more, now, I make most of my own seasonings and rubs. I’ve got a great Pot Roast Rub that works for beef or pork, and I make my own fajita seasoning, too.
Are you ready for this?
Measure all your ingredients into a bowl. Stir them all together with a fork (to help break up clumps). Pour the seasoning into a spice jar to store. Make sure you label your jar!
Aaaaand – that’s it! It’s that easy! It almost makes me ashamed that I used to buy the premade stuff.
We have these awesome cabinet door spice racks for all of our spices. I love them because I can see all my spices at one time, instead of searching through rows or spinning a lazy susan, trying to find what I need.
You can store this taco seasoning for a loooong time. If it’s a little clumpy or stuck together when you go to use it (because it’s been sitting and settling), just shake the jar up, or stir it with a fork to break up clumps.
The taco seasoning is as good as the quality of spices you use to make it. So if you use the Wal-mart store brand, you’ll still have good taco seasoning, but if you use really good, high quality spices, you’ll have amazing taco seasoning. Which in turn will give you amazing tacos or burritos or soup or whatever.
My favorite place to buy spices is Penzey’s Spices. I have to order them online, because their physical stores are in Wisconsin and I don’t live there. Ha. But, the spices are very high quality and delicious. The prices are reasonable, and they offer a ton of deals. Sign up for their emails, because I get offers all the time for free jars of spices or half-off gift boxes, etc. (I am not being paid to promote them – I just honestly love this company and believe in their products!)
Their Tuscan Sunset seasoning blend is delicious on roasted potatoes, and their cumin smells and tastes like perfection.
